Leading-edge research
Students at Australian universities are involved in world-class
research across many fields of study. Australian universities and
researchers are recognised for their innovative ideas, approaches
and solutions.
Australian universities undertake research on the international
stage by working with universities in other countries or on
international projects across countries.
The Australian Government invests in research. Its program,
‘Backing Australia’s Ability’ is providing A$8 billion over 10
years for science and innovation. Companies and associations also
offer funding for university research projects.
To extend research results onto a commercial basis, the
Australian Government developed the Cooperative Research Centre program
in 1991. The program combines universities, research and business.
Since its start, 168 centres have been set up across six broad
sectors - manufacturing technology, mining and energy, environment,
medical science and technology, information and communication
technology, and agriculture and rural-based manufacturing. Many of
the centres are in universities and are a base for postgraduate
research and training.
