Part-time work
International students in Australian can work part-time (20
hours) during semester and full-time in holiday periods.
Before gaining paid part-time employment, you must lodge an
application for a ‘student visa with permission to work’ with the
Department of Immigration and Citizenship. You can do this
online once you
have started your course in Australia. It costs $60 to apply for a
work visa (this fee is reviewed each year).
When you gain work, you must also apply for a tax file number
and pay tax to the Australian Government. You may be able to claim
some tax back depending on how much work you do.
Note that international students must have enough funds to live
in Australia without being supplemented by part-time work. It is
important for students to have time to settle in and concentrate on
their studies before looking for work.
Most universities have employment offices which can assist with
finding a job. Some courses include paid placements as part of
their learning.
